Chapter 1
RR

I have just been promoted to head custodian. That means that I’m now in charge of the key ring that carries over a hundred keys. I have a giddy feeling in my gut. But it’s not because I’m now head custodian. No, I noticed that “they” forgot to take the crooked key with the initials R.R. off the ring. Those initials have a simple meaning. They stood for Red Room, as far as I knew. For nine years, I have wondered what was behind the door of the Red Room. Now, I’m just about to find out.

As I was sneaking down the hallway quietly, I was thinking, is the Red Room really called the Red Room? Or does it stand for something else? Red Rover…no, that can’t be it. That’s the name of my old dog, the one father gave me. No, no, it must stand for Red Room, but why is it here? I slid the keys through my fingers until the bent key was in my hand. I looked around cautiously, making sure I was alone in the eerie, quiet hallway. I put the key in the door and turned it to the left. Nothing. I must hurry up, because my boss checks the hallways every hour, to make sure we’re doing our jobs. I slowly twisted the key to the right when-THUMP! “Someone is here!” I cried in shock. I could feel the sweat trickling down my cheeks. “I’m too late! My boss is here! I looked at my wrist watch, it’s 6:45. But that’s fifteen minutes until he’s supposed to arrive! Well it doesn’t matter at the time, I just need to get out of here…N0W! I turned to run, but instead I stumbled – over my lucky keychain! It must have fallen out of my jeans when I didn’t notice. My father gave it to me before he died in a plane crash. I’ve had it ever since. My mind was jumbling full of bad thoughts, if I didn’t get out of here soon, who knows what could happen. I thought that the quickest way out of plain sight was to go into the Red Room.

So, I finally twisted the key all the way to the right. The door opened up by itself, creaking slightly as it opened all the way. “errr” went the door. It was marvelous inside! It-it-it was every custodian’s dream!
